September 11, 2014

Hello Memorial School Community!

It's Thursday of our first full week of school and it's been a great week so far!  We kicked off the week with a Grade 1 celebration of the summer reading initiative in honor of International Literacy Day.  According to their website,  "September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated in 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally. Celebrations take place around the world." For more information visit: http://internationalliteracyday.org/about-international-literacy-day.

This was the first year 0f the Summer Reading Initiative for the Memorial School. Our goals were to encourage reading and, along with other schools around the world, to break last year’s reading world record of 176, 438,473 minutes. Due to the efforts of our students and families, we were able to help break the world record! This summer kids read 273, 112, 257 minutes! That’s 96, 673, 784 more minutes than last year! Outstanding job everyone!!

To recognize the efforts of our students, the CSA generously donated $200 worth of gift certificates to Park Street Books which were awarded to out top reader and ten other students chosen at random from the participants who returned their reading logs.

Congratulations to our winners and great job to all who participated!

CSA Meeting...Date Change!

The first CSA meeting of the 2014-2015 school year will be held on Monday, September 22nd at 7:00 pm in the Teachers' Lounge at Memorial.  The change is a result of the previous meeting being inadvertently scheduled on September 24th, the evening prior to the start of Rosh Hashanah. We apologize for any inconvenience this changes causes.  Please come - all are welcome!

See you on Tuesday evening for PIN Night (6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.)!

Have a great weekend and as always, thanks for reading.

Sincerely,

Missy Bilsborough
Memorial School Principal
